Regional price divergence as Victoria averages highest daily price at 120.90 dollars
Regional price outcomes showed notable variation with Victoria and Tasmania averaging 120.90 and 110.50 dollars per megawatt hour respectively. South Australia experienced 26 negative intervals, reaching a minimum of -7.00 dollars, whereas New South Wales and Victoria saw no negative pricing throughout the day.
Peak demand occurred during the evening across most regions, led by New South Wales at 11,200 megawatts at 18:10. Total energy consumption for the day was highest in New South Wales at 433.1 gigawatt hours, followed by Victoria at 351.8 gigawatt hours.
Fossil fuels dominated the generation mix with coal at 56.6 percent and gas at 4.7 percent of total output. Combined solar and wind contributions reached 25.1 percent, while hydro generation added a further 11.1 percent to the daily energy supply.
Battery storage systems discharged 15,620 megawatt hours, resulting in a net consumption of 439 megawatt hours after charging. Total emissions for the NEM were 397,176 tonnes of carbon dioxide, representing a 6.3 percent increase compared to the same day last week.
Today · Forward projections indicate a price peak of 319.04 dollars in Queensland at 19:30 and 145.00 dollars in South Australia at 18:30.
Why it matters · The daily average of 98.10 dollars sits 49.3 percent above the 7-day average, extending a four-day upward trend in NEM prices. This price escalation occurred despite a healthy 37.3 percent renewable share, as high evening demand peaks coincided with coal providing over half of the total generation.
