Market Snapshot

NEM daily average prices rise as South Australia records negative intervals

Average regional prices showed moderate divergence with Victoria and New South Wales leading at 86.00 and 83.20 dollars per MWh respectively. South Australia remained the price floor with an average of 61.40 dollars and was the only region to experience negative pricing intervals. Maximum prices across all regions remained below 130.00 dollars per MWh throughout the trading day.

Evening demand peaks occurred almost simultaneously across the mainland between 18:00 and 18:35 with New South Wales peaking at 11444 MW. Total system demand was supported by a generation mix where fossil fuels contributed over 60 percent of total energy. Wind and solar utility generation combined for 20.6 percent of the mix while hydro contributed 9.4 percent.

Battery storage systems discharged 13537 MWh to the grid but finished the day with a net consumption of 970 MWh. FCAS costs were most active in Tasmania and South Australia with Raise Regulation and Lower 60 Second services recording the highest total costs. Total emissions for the period reached 382639 tonnes of CO2 which represents a 9.1 percent increase compared to the same day last week.

Today · Forward schedules indicate a peak price of 319.04 dollars per MWh in Queensland at 19:30 with other regions remaining below 150.00 dollars.

Why it matters · The daily average of 76.50 dollars sits 13.3 percent above the 7-day average and continues a three-day upward trend from the weekly low. This price firming occurred alongside a 9.1 percent rise in emissions and a reliance on coal for over half of the total generation mix.
