Market Snapshot

South Australia records negative intervals while Tasmania sees FCAS price spike

Regional average prices ranged from $40.50/MWh in South Australia to $72.70/MWh in New South Wales. South Australia was the only region to record negative price intervals, reaching a minimum of -$12.50/MWh during the day. Demand peaked across most regions between 17:40 and 19:00, with New South Wales reaching a maximum load of 9,375 MW.

Coal remained the primary generation source at 55.2%, while wind and solar combined for 28.6% of the total fuel mix. Renewables reached an instantaneous peak of 60.2% at 11:40. Battery storage contributed 9,859 MWh to the grid, resulting in a net consumption of 1,674 MWh after charging.

Total emissions for the day were 337,169 tonnes of CO2, representing a 4% decrease compared to the same day last week. Significant cost volatility occurred in the contingency FCAS markets. The RAISE6SEC service in Tasmania peaked at $20,290.00/MWh, driving total costs for that specific service to $536,758.

Today · Forward forecasts indicate a peak price of $319.04/MWh in Queensland at 19:30, with New South Wales expected to reach $98.25/MWh.

Why it matters · The daily average of $59.06/MWh sits 6.8% below the weekly average, extending a period of moderate pricing despite a coal-heavy generation mix. The combination of negative pricing in South Australia and extreme FCAS volatility in Tasmania highlights significant regional divergence in market stability.
