Regional price divergence as southern states record significant negative intervals
Price outcomes showed a clear north-south divide with Tasmania and New South Wales maintaining positive pricing throughout the day. In contrast, South Australia and Victoria saw minimum prices drop to -$12.80/MWh and -$12.10/MWh respectively. Queensland recorded three negative intervals with an average price of $50.00/MWh.
Renewable generation reached an instantaneous peak of 68.0% at 11:55 AEST, supported by wind contributing 24.8% of total energy. Solar sources provided a combined 12.7% of the generation mix while hydro accounted for 6.2%. Batteries discharged 9,864 MWh to the grid, resulting in a net consumption of 2,900 MWh after charging.
System demand peaked at 8,924 MW in New South Wales and 7,265 MW in Queensland during the early evening. South Australia was the outlier with a midday peak of 1,791 MW coinciding with high solar output. Total daily energy consumption was highest in New South Wales at 350.2 GWh.
Frequency Control Ancillary Services saw a notable cost event in Tasmania with the RAISE6SEC service reaching $3,908/MWh. This contributed to a total daily cost for that specific service of $104,571 across two spike intervals. Other FCAS categories remained stable with minimal price volatility across the mainland regions.
Today · Forecasts indicate a peak price of $319.04/MWh in Queensland at 19:30 AEST with no current reserve alerts.
Why it matters · The daily average price of $43.20/MWh sits 36.2% below the weekly average, extending a volatile trend established over the last seven days. This lower price environment occurred despite coal maintaining a 50.7% share, as high wind penetration and battery activity offset the impact of evening demand peaks.
