Market Snapshot

NEM daily average prices rise as coal provides majority of generation

Regional price averages ranged from 67.80 dollars in Victoria to 90.70 dollars in South Australia. Negative price intervals were confined to Victoria and South Australia, while other regions maintained positive pricing throughout the entire trading day.

Coal dominated the generation mix at 53.1 percent, followed by wind at 20.2 percent and gas at 7.3 percent. Utility and rooftop solar combined for 10.8 percent of the total energy, while hydro contributed 7.2 percent.

Batteries discharged 9,307 megawatt hours to the grid, resulting in a net consumption of 3,552 megawatt hours after charging. Total system emissions rose by 23.7 percent compared to the same day last week, reaching 344,905 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

FCAS costs were led by the Raise 6 Second service at 54,280 dollars, with Tasmania recording the highest peak price of 166 dollars. Interconnector flows saw significant transfers from Victoria into New South Wales and from Queensland into New South Wales.

Today · Predispatch forecasts indicate a peak price of 319.04 dollars in Queensland at 19:30.

Why it matters · The daily average of 83.60 dollars sits 38 percent above the weekly average, extending a volatile trend established over the last eight days. This price elevation occurred despite a healthy 60.3 percent instantaneous renewable peak, as high coal reliance and increased emissions coincided with evening demand peaks.
