Market Snapshot

New South Wales leads prices as coal maintains majority generation share

Regional price averages remained below $100/MWh across the NEM, with New South Wales recording the highest average of $97.00/MWh. South Australia and Victoria experienced brief negative price intervals, reaching minimums of -$5.20/MWh and -$2.00/MWh respectively, while other regions remained positive throughout the day.

New South Wales recorded the highest demand peak of 9,785 MW at 18:00, coinciding with the Queensland peak of 7,907 MW. In contrast, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania reached their maximum demand levels during the morning period between 08:00 and 08:15.

Coal dominated the generation mix at 58.0%, supported by 10.1% gas and 9.6% hydro. Variable renewables contributed 19.9% through wind and solar, with the total renewable share peaking instantaneously at 48.4% at 12:15. Batteries discharged 15,331 MWh to the grid, resulting in a net discharge of 1,430 MWh.

FCAS costs were led by Regulation services, with Raise Regulation totaling $52,922 and peaking in Tasmania at $62.00/MWh. Total emissions for the trading day reached 388,272 tonnes of CO2, representing a significant increase over the previous week.

Today · Queensland is forecast to reach a peak price of $319.04/MWh at 19:30, while other regional peaks remain between $61.84/MWh and $145.00/MWh.

Why it matters · The daily average of $92.60/MWh sits 42.5% above the weekly average, extending a volatile trend where prices have fluctuated between $44 and $92. This price elevation aligns with a 28.5% rise in emissions and a high 68.1% fossil fuel share, despite batteries maintaining a net discharge position.
