Market Snapshot

Southern regions record near zero average prices amid high wind generation

Regional price spreads were extreme, with South Australia recording 34 negative intervals and a minimum price of -$12.5/MWh. In contrast, Tasmania saw the highest daily peak of $139.4/MWh, while New South Wales and Queensland both averaged above $80/MWh.

System demand peaked in New South Wales at 10,363 MW during the evening peak at 17:55. Coal remained the primary fuel source at 50.0% of the mix, while wind generation contributed a substantial 28.3% share.

Batteries discharged 8,378 MWh throughout the day, resulting in a net consumption of 4,274 MWh. Tasmania dominated the FCAS market costs, particularly within the Raise Regulation service which peaked at $95.0/MWh.

Interconnector flows showed significant movement from Victoria into New South Wales and South Australia. Queensland exported heavily to New South Wales, while Tasmania remained a net exporter to the mainland via the Basslink interconnector.

Today · Forward forecasts indicate a Queensland price peak of $319.04/MWh at 19:30, with South Australia expected to reach $145.0/MWh at 18:30.

Why it matters · The daily average price of $49.0/MWh sits 18.5% below the weekly average, breaking a three-day trend of rising prices. This price softening occurred despite a slight increase in emissions, as 63 negative intervals in the south failed to offset the high-price floors maintained in the northern regions.
