Market Snapshot

Renewable share peaks at 78 percent as regional prices remain moderate

Average regional prices ranged from $56.50/MWh in Tasmania to $72.00/MWh in New South Wales. Negative price intervals were frequent across the market, with Queensland recording 94 instances and South Australia 86. Maximum prices remained below $160/MWh in all jurisdictions during the trading day.

Demand peaked across the mainland between 18:15 and 19:10 AEST, led by New South Wales at 8,934 MW. Total energy consumption for the day reached 966.6 GWh. Coal remained the primary generation source at 45.6%, followed by wind at 16.1% and combined solar at 25.5%.

Batteries contributed 17,471 MWh to the grid via discharge, resulting in a net consumption of 3,878 MWh after charging. FCAS costs were highest for regulation services, with Tasmania recording peak prices for both Raise and Lower Regulation. Total daily emissions were 286,211 tonnes of CO2.

Today · Predispatch forecasts indicate a peak price of $319.04/MWh in Queensland at 19:30 AEST.

Why it matters · The daily average price sits 34.5% above the 7-day average, extending a volatile trend where daily figures have fluctuated between $15.80 and $61.10. This price elevation occurred despite a high 48.1% renewable share and an 11.6% reduction in emissions, reflecting a tight correlation between evening demand peaks and battery discharge requirements.
