Market Snapshot

South Australian prices surge as NEM average climbs forty per cent

Regional price dispersion was significant as South Australia and Victoria averaged 296.3 and 165.9 dollars per megawatt hour respectively. Tasmania recorded the lowest regional average at 89.7 dollars per megawatt hour. No negative price intervals were observed across any NEM regions during the trading day.

Demand peaked earliest in New South Wales at 10,926 megawatts during the morning period at 07:40. Evening peaks occurred across all other regions between 17:35 and 18:30. Total energy consumption was highest in New South Wales at 423.7 gigawatt hours.

Coal-fired generation provided 53.1% of the energy mix followed by combined solar at 15.7% and gas at 11.5%. Wind generation was relatively low at 5.8% of the total mix. The instantaneous renewable share reached a peak of 59.7% at 12:15.

Batteries discharged 18,116 megawatt hours to the grid with a net consumption of 2,044 megawatt hours. FCAS costs were most prominent in the Raise Regulation service which totalled 55,933 dollars. Total emissions increased by 17.7% compared to the same day last week.

Why it matters · The daily average of 167.4 dollars per megawatt hour extends a four-day rising trend and sits significantly above the 118.01 dollar weekly average. This elevated price environment coincided with a low 5.8% wind contribution and a 17.7% increase in emissions intensity relative to last week.
