Market Snapshot

South Australian prices surge as NEM daily average rises significantly

Regional price outcomes diverged significantly across the NEM, with South Australia averaging 300.1 dollars per megawatt hour compared to 83.8 dollars in Queensland. New South Wales and Victoria recorded averages of 125.4 and 146.8 dollars respectively, while Tasmania remained lower at 85.3 dollars per megawatt hour.

System demand peaked in the evening across all regions, led by New South Wales reaching 11,132 megawatts at 19:05. Total NEM energy consumption was supported by a generation mix where fossil fuels provided over 64 percent of total output.

Renewable generation reached an instantaneous peak of 59.6 percent at 12:15, though the daily share settled at 33.8 percent. Battery storage systems discharged 17,430 megawatt hours to the grid, contributing 2.5 percent of the total generation for the day.

FCAS costs were notable in Tasmania, where the Raise 6 Second service peaked at 20,290 dollars per megawatt hour. Total emissions for the trading day reached 390,153 tonnes of carbon dioxide, a 22.2 percent increase compared to the same day last week.

Today · Forward projections indicate a peak price of 319.04 dollars in Queensland at 19:30, while other regional peaks remain under 150 dollars.

Why it matters · The daily average of 143.4 dollars per megawatt hour extends a three-day upward trend and sits 38 percent above the seven-day mean. This price escalation occurred alongside a 22 percent rise in emissions and a reliance on battery discharge during evening demand peaks.
