Market Snapshot

South Australian prices lead NEM as regional demand peaks converge

Regional average prices ranged from $57.9/MWh in Tasmania to $90.3/MWh in South Australia, with no negative price intervals recorded across the market. New South Wales reached the highest demand peak of 9,272 MW at 17:55, coinciding with peaks in Queensland and Tasmania.

Renewable generation reached an instantaneous peak share of 59.4% at 12:05, supported by a combined solar contribution of 13.4%. Wind generation provided 13.1% of the daily mix, while hydro assets added 9.1% to the total supply.

Batteries discharged 8,126 MWh to the grid, resulting in a net consumption of 4,025 MWh after accounting for charging cycles. FCAS costs were led by the Raise Regulation service at $42,258, with the highest price of $20/MWh occurring in New South Wales.

Total emissions reached 347,558 tonnes of CO2, representing a 15.1% increase compared to the same day last week. Interconnector flows saw significant movement from Victoria into New South Wales and from New South Wales into Queensland.

Today · Queensland is forecast to reach a peak price of $319.04/MWh at 19:30, while Tasmania expects a high of $122.53/MWh at 17:30.

Why it matters · The daily average of $67.8/MWh sits 47.8% above the weekly average, breaking a three-day trend of prices below $45/MWh. This price elevation occurred despite a moderate 36.5% renewable share, as synchronous demand peaks across the mainland tightened the supply-demand balance.
