Southern regions record low prices amid high renewable penetration and negative intervals
Regional price dispersion was significant as southern states decoupled from the north. Victoria and South Australia averaged 10.40 and 11.00 dollars per megawatt hour respectively, while New South Wales reached 68.00 dollars. Tasmania maintained a mid-range average of 55.00 dollars per megawatt hour.
System demand peaked in the evening between 17:45 and 18:25 across all regions. New South Wales led the peak load at 10,043 megawatts, followed by Queensland at 7,739 megawatts. Total daily energy consumption across the NEM was approximately 1,098 gigawatt hours.
Coal provided 52.4 percent of the generation mix, while renewables contributed a 41.7 percent share. Wind generation was the primary renewable source at 23.0 percent, followed by combined solar at 11.8 percent. Batteries discharged 10,691 megawatt hours to the grid during the trading day.
Total emissions of 329,079 tonnes of carbon dioxide represented a 4.6 percent decrease compared to the same day last week. FCAS costs were most active in Tasmania, where the Lower Regulation service reached a peak price of 140 dollars per megawatt hour.
Today · Forward projections indicate a Queensland peak of 319.04 dollars at 19:30 and a South Australian peak of 145.00 dollars at 18:30.
Why it matters · The daily average of 41.50 dollars sits 29.9 percent below the weekly average, extending a downward trend from the 92.60 dollar high earlier in the period. This price suppression occurred as the 41.7 percent renewable share coincided with 33 negative intervals in southern regions, despite batteries maintaining a net charging position of 4,280 megawatt hours.
