New South Wales records highest average price amid morning demand peaks
Regional average prices ranged from $67.20/MWh in South Australia and Tasmania to $89.30/MWh in New South Wales. Victoria recorded the highest single interval price of $176.50/MWh while South Australia saw the lowest dip at -$7.00/MWh. Negative pricing was most prevalent in South Australia and Queensland which combined for 132 negative intervals during the day.
Demand peaked earliest in New South Wales at 10,968 MW during the 07:35 interval followed closely by Victoria at 7,733 MW. Queensland reached its maximum demand of 7,468 MW later in the evening at 17:55. Total system energy consumption was led by New South Wales at 417.9 GWh for the 24-hour period.
Renewable generation achieved an instantaneous peak of 70.0% at 13:20 driven by a combined solar contribution of 20.4%. Wind and hydro generation provided 6.9% and 9.1% of the total mix respectively. Battery storage assets discharged 23,304 MWh to the grid representing 3.4% of the total generation share.
FCAS costs were concentrated in Tasmania where Raise Regulation services peaked at $80.00/MWh. Total emissions for the NEM were 377,361 tCO2 which represents a 7.8% decrease compared to the same day last week. Interconnector flows showed significant movement from Queensland into New South Wales via the NSW1-QLD1 link.
Today · Predispatch forecasts indicate a price peak of $319.04/MWh in Queensland at 19:30 while other regions expect maximums below $150.00/MWh.
Why it matters · The daily average of $83.80/MWh sits slightly below the 7-day average of $84.94/MWh and breaks a three-day trend of rising prices. This price softening occurred alongside a 7.8% reduction in emissions and a high frequency of negative intervals in northern and southern regions.
